Hanover Township is joining the Administration for Community Living in celebrating May as Older Americans Month. More than 12,100 older adults reside in the township, according to census.gov.

In honor of the celebration, the township will host free fitness classes at the Senior Center, 240 S. Route 59, Bartlett, the week of May 25 to promote physical fitness among older adults. Programs include in-person yoga, outdoor in-person yoga, virtual yoga, in-person senior exercise and virtual senior exercise. Registration is required.

Township older adults are invited to attend an outdoor concert with Bob Kalal May 18. Kalal performs a variety of songs ranging from rock, pop, jazz, blues and Dixieland. Registration is required. The concert will be held outdoors, weather permitting, at the Senior Center.

Free virtual activities during the month include a weekly social hour, monthly caregiver support group, and various information sessions.

Free in-person activities during the month include recent-release movies shown weekly and technology classes. Registration is required.

During May, township staff will also conduct free tours of the center for residents, seniors and their families. Built in 2002, the center features a computer lab, an arts and crafts room with a kiln, rooms for exercise classes, a community health office, a gift shop and the Stars-N-Stripes Cafe, which offers five daily options for curbside meal pickup.

All residents that participate in a tour will receive a voucher for a complimentary lunch at the cafe.

Hanover Township serves more than 101,000 residents in portions of the Cook County communities of Streamwood, Elgin, Bartlett, Hanover Park, Hoffman Estates and Schaumburg.
