Oakton to host free virtual education career, transfer fair

Early childhood and K-12 teaching careers are rising in Illinois, and Oakton Community College is hosting a free, virtual career and transfer fair for individuals exploring career options in education - or looking to advance their education and training.

Oakton's fifth annual Early Childhood Education and K-12 Education Career and Transfer Fair is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 21.

The event, which is free to attend and open to the public, brings together representatives from early childhood education, special education and other organizations that provide education-based services for school-age children.

They are ready to share information on temporary, part-time and full-time employment opportunities.

Additionally, attendees can learn how Oakton's Early Childhood and K-12 Education academic programs will prepare them to succeed in careers as educators. Students enrolled at Oakton can choose from several degree paths or transfer programs focusing on early childhood or K-12 education.

Students interested in Early Childhood Education can earn an A.A.S. degree or a certificate in Basic and Advanced Early Childhood Education; Basic and Advanced Toddler care; and Early Childhood Education Administration.

Those interested in K-12 education can select pre-majors in Elementary Education; Secondary Education in Science or Math; Secondary Education in Humanities, Behavioral/Social Sciences or Arts; and Special Education. Also, students can select the Paraprofessional Educator pathway.

Representatives from four-year colleges and universities, including Northern Illinois University, Dominican University, National Louis University, Northeastern Illinois University and Roosevelt University will also be on hand to share information on transfer opportunities and bachelor's degree programs.

"This annual event is a wonderful opportunity to connect high school students, OCC students, and community members interested in birth-grade 12 education with local employers and transfer schools. It's a win-win situation," said Paula Luszcz, faculty chair of Oakton's Early Childhood Education Program.

According to Earlychildhoodteacher.org, there are more than 24,000 preschool teachers and 17,000 child care workers employed in Illinois. Job openings are expected to increase by about 4% by 2026.

The Early Childhood Education and K-12 Education Career and Transfer Fair is presented by Oakton's-12 Education Program, Early Childhood Education Program, Early Childhood Education Club and the Oakton Future Educators Club.
