Saint Viator High School moves fall play outdoors

In an effort to maintain social distancing and protect the student performers and audience members, Saint Viator High School in Arlington Heights has moved the performance of its fall play outside and will livestream one performance.

The fall play, "Girls in the Boat" by Alice Austen, will be performed the first weekend in October in the parking lot on the south side of the school, 1213 E. Oakton St., Arlington Heights.

This production marks the first under the direction of Megan Gray, the school's new theater teacher. Gray replaced Kate Costello, who ran the school's theater program for 20 years.

"Girls in the Boat" chronicles the history of women's rowing in America, from the Yale Women's Rowing team and their fight for their Title IX rights in the 1970s to the inclusion of women's rowing in the Olympics.

"The play's story is told through dynamic ensemble work, movement and powerful female characters," said Gray. "The show debuted at the end of 2018 and was written with high school performers in mind, so it resonates well with our students and reflects the thinking of our time.

"We're grateful to have the opportunity to share this story with the public, despite the COVID pandemic."

"Girls in the Boat" will run 7 p.m. Friday Oct. 2, to Sunday, Oct. 4, with an understudy performance on Saturday. Seating will be socially distanced, masks are required and the temperature of all audience members will be taken upon arrival.

The Sunday performance will be streamed live on Saint Viator's Facebook page.

Tickets for live performances can be purchased at https://eventdyno.herokuapp.com/events/2.
