HEParks to keep aquatic center closed this summer due to COVID-19

Hoffman Estates Park District (HEParks) will not open Seascape Family Aquatic Center this summer due to COVID-19.

The extended Stay-at-Home order, combined with unknowns associated with group size and physical distancing guidelines combined with the potential for spreading of the virus through water has prompted the HEParks Board of Commissioner's decision, on April 28, 2020, to not open the aquatic center this year.

"This was a hard but correct decision to make," said HEParks Executive Director Craig Talsma. "The community trusts the district to provide safe and fun recreational experiences. With the extended Stay-at-Home order, Seascape is currently not allowed to open. Also, in addition to health concerns, we would also be unable to hire and effectively train lifeguards and staff even if the facility were to be allowed to open sometime this summer. Safety, combined with physical distancing and group size limitations, led us to make this difficult, yet responsible choice."

Seascape is typically open from Memorial Day through Labor Day. It offers swimming lessons, open swim, and special events to the community as well as rental options. During the summer months, the aquatic center frequently reaches its operating capacity of 1,300 patrons.

Patrons who purchased their Seascape season passes in advance will receive full refunds from the District. Refund processes will begin the first week of May.

In addition to the Seascape operations, the Board also voted to close the four splash parks within the Hoffman Estates community, as well, as the indoor pools at The Club at Prairie Stone.

HEParks is offering a variety of virtual programs for the community during the Stay-at-Home Order. HEParks' Summer Virtual Program Guide is available April 30 at HEParks.org.
