Wheeling Township assists residents during COVID-19 pandemic

Wheeling Township remains dedicated to assisting its residents during the COVID-19 pandemic.

While the township building is not open to the public, essential services continue to be provided through the food pantry, transportation, the General Assistance Department and the Assessor's Office.

Safety precautions, such as sanitization of all areas where individuals will be present, as well as social distancing, are being followed by the township.

"Ensuring our residents have access to food and transportation to critical medical needs like dialysis is a top priority, particularly now," said Wheeling Township Supervisor Kathleen Penner. "We will continue to offer our support and guidance for all who need us."

Should residents require food from the food pantry, they should contact the Township at (847) 259-7730.

Bags of shelf-stable foods are available for both current food pantry clients and any township resident in need of food.

For community members interested in donating to the food pantry, donations are welcomed and appreciated.

Current requests include canned fruits, canned meats, and canned vegetables, as well as soups, packaged potatoes, rice, pasta, cereal, and tuna. Financial donations are also welcomed as the township is working to keep up with growing community needs. Unemployment rates continue to rise due to the"Stay at Home" order and subsequent temporary closures of many area businesses.

The transportation department continues to operate Monday through Friday and is providing rides to critical medical appointments including dialysis, but is also available for seniors and persons with disabilities who need to get to a grocery store. The buses are sanitized daily, and social distancing is being practiced on every bus. For more information, contact the Transportation Department directly at (847) 259-7743.

For residents who need help with General Assistance or Emergency Assistance, they should call the township at (847) 259-7730 and a member of the department will return the call.

Senior Services staff are also in the building and available to answer residents' questions.

The Assessor's Office staff is available to assist property owners with property tax questions via email or phone. Residents may reach the Assessor's office by calling (847) 259-1515 or via email at taxinfo@wheelingtownship.com.

Through its dedication to providing services to residents, whether by helping them maintain their independence, sustaining their health, or offering critical assistance during times of need, Wheeling Township is continuing to make a significant difference in the community, as it has since 1850.
