Tradition is the most important at the KD Market

Paczki were initially prepared from bread dough and stuffed with back fat. They were treated as a snack for vodka. Sweet Paczki appeared on Polish tables in the 16th century as a kind of surprise treat. Almond or peanut was put inside - whoever found such a Paczek had a year of happiness and prosperity. Later, donuts began to be filled with fruit jam, marmalade and sprinkled with powdered sugar or glazed.

Traditional Polish Paczki are a staple of the KD Market stores. Made in-store Paczki are prepared daily according to an old traditional Polish recipe.

What distinguishes KD Market Paczki from other Polish store's Paczki is the fact that they are fried with the filling inside. We are very proud to maintain this old baking tradition. On Fat Thursday all KD Market locations are literally stormed by customers. And no wonder, because Paczki from KD Market are worth the sin. On ordinary days, our bakeries make about 400 donuts, but during Fat Thursday they make nearly 30,000!

KD Market offers paczki with traditional fillings, such as plum butter, rosehip or raspberry marmalade, which are the most popular among buyers. Our selection, however, cannot skip Paczki with Nutella or vanilla custard. A few years ago we introduced a new flavor - blackcurrant, and it stole our customer's hearts.

The tastiest and the healthiest are paczki fried in natural lard - says Jola, baker of the KD Market in Schaumburg. - Lard has a high smoking temperature, heats up well and the paczki doesn't oxidize. The white border around the paczki indicates its lightness, i.e. well-wrinkled and grown yeast dough. Such "light" donuts do not fall to the bottom of the frying pan and float freely on the surface.

Fat Thursday and Fat Tuesday are taken seriously in KD Market stores. This year, we are first on the Polish market to launch an online ordering system for Paczki. In the comfort of your home or during lunch at work, you can quickly order and pay for our traditional sweets and pick them up at the nearest KD Market location. Considering our customers' needs our bakery department in all locations will be open from 6 am on Fat Thursday.

On that day Poles do not count calories or the number of Paczki eaten, because, as the Old Polish proverb says: Everyone should eat at least one Paczek on Fat Thursday, otherwise they will not be successful throughout the next year. Do I believe it? Not sure, but I don't want to risk it.

Traditional Polish Paczki can be purchased at all four KD Market store locations: 9500 W Irving Park Road, Schiller Park; 1102 S Roselle Road, Schaumburg; 835 W Dundee Road, Wheeling; 1046 S Elmhurst Road, Mount Prospect, and ordered online at www.mykdmarket/catering.
