Des Plaines History Center Honors Park District's 100th Anniversary

Des Plaines, IL-The Des Plaines History Center is proud to announce the opening of their newest exhibit: "Des Plaines Park District Centennial Anniversary." This retrospective will examine the founding of the Des Plaines Park District in 1919 and its growth into the distinguished park district it is today. Siobhan Heraty, Curator of Collections, will lecture about the anniversary as part of the History Center's monthly "Coffee Talk" series on Thursday, June 13, at 1:30pm.

Curator Heraty explains the significance of the Park District's founding as a mark of achievement for the city itself: "Des Plaines was no longer a small town in 1919, but a growing community. As development increased across the city, the idea of public recreation spaces and programs resonated with Des Plaines residents and they voted overwhelmingly in favor of founding the Park District. The Des Plaines Park District history is closely tied to other community organizations. In fact, the first event ever held in the Rand Park Field House was the Des Plaines Fire Department's Annual Dance in 1940. Discovering details like these was the most fascinating part of my research." All members of the public are welcome to attend Curator Heraty's lecture as well at the official exhibit opening that evening at the Des Plaines History Center from 6:00-8:00pm. Appetizers and desserts will be served.
