Literacy Classes Begin in January at Schaumburg Library

Adults who want to improve their English language or reading skills, or who are interested in becoming U.S. citizens, are welcome to register for classes at the Schaumburg Township District Library, 130 S. Roselle Road, Schaumburg. Classes are free, but registration is required. The following classes are presented in partnership with the library and District 214 Community Education.

Citizenship Classes will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturdays, Jan. 19-April 27, at the Hoffman Estates Branch Library, 1550 Hassell Road. Those who want to attend in Schaumburg or take evening classes can choose to come from 6:30-9:30 p.m., Mondays and Fridays, Jan. 28-April 22, at the Central Library, 130 S. Roselle Road. Each participant must bring his or her green card to register at the first class. Students will practice reading and writing in English and learn how to answer citizenship questions from the N-400 applications. The class will also discuss obstacles to becoming a U.S. citizen.

Read to Learn classes will take place from 9:30 a.m.-noon on Wednesdays, Jan. 23-April 17, in the Adult Classroom of the Central Library in Schaumburg. Classes will also take place from 9:30 a.m. until noon on Mondays, Jan. 28-April 29, in the Rasmussen Room at the Central Library. Adults will learn to improve their English reading and writing skills by working with trained volunteer tutors. Reading levels will be tested during registration at the first class.

Registration and testing for Reading 101 will take place from 9 a.m.-noon on Tuesday, Jan. 29 and Thursday, Jan. 31, at the Forest View Educational Center, 2121 S. Goebbert Road, in Arlington Heights, however the classes will take place at the Central Library in Schaumburg. Participants must attend both days of testing prior to attending classes, which take place from 9 a.m.-noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Feb. 5-May 9. This advanced English class covers vocabulary, comprehension and fluency.

ESL Class: Intermediate will begin with registration and testing from 12:30-3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29 or Thursday, Jan. 31, in the Adult Classroom of the Central Library in Schaumburg. Classes will take place from 12:30-3:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Feb. 5-May 9, in the same location. Participants will improve their English speaking and reading skills. Reading levels will be tested during the first class.
