ECC to host Sept. 19 event on social and cultural capital

Elgin Community College will kick-off its new "Critical Engagement" event series with "Secret Wealth," a screening of a TED talk video featuring educator and poet Jamila Lyiscott, followed by a guided discussion about social and cultural capital and how to leverage that for personal success, on Wednesday, Sept. 19 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in Building C, Room C120. The event is free and open to the public.

"We're excited to launch this new event series with 'Secret Wealth,' which will be co-lead by Brittany Barber who is one of our most compelling staff members," said Liddy Hope, PhD, director of ECC's center for enhancement of teaching and learning (CETL). "Through our new 'Critical Engagement' event series, we hope to engage the community in relevant dialogue that tackles important topics."

The event will be co-facilitated by ECC Student Life Coordinator Brittany Barber who is an advisor for Black Student Achievers, a student organization at ECC; a creator and manager of the college's annual Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) fair; and responsible for the creation of ECC's inaugural "I Dream in Color Week" which was celebrated on Sept. 10 to 15.

The "Critical Engagement" series is sponsored by ECC's CETL in collaboration with Student Life, Global/International Studies Team (GIST) and Multicultural and Global Initiatives Committee (MAGIC). Additional events will be forthcoming during the fall semester.
