Artists display works at Chicago Botanic Garden this summer

Two art exhibitions currently on display at the Chicago Botanic Garden give visitors an opportunity to take a break from the heat of summer and view stunning pieces bringing awareness to plant conservation and celebrating women in the sciences.

The art in Penelope Gottlieb's "Against Forgetting" is bold and colorful, but also conveys important messages. Gottlieb painted extinct and endangered plants, as well as invasive species, to give viewers a reminder to "contemplate what's happening to the world, to the state of nature," she said. Gottlieb works out of her studio in Santa Barbara, California, and finds inspiration in her backyard garden. "Against Forgetting" is displayed in the Joutras Gallery and runs until Sunday, Aug. 12

"Big Blooms," by Paul Lange, has been on display since the Orchid Show, but the addition of dedications on each photograph offer a reason to visit again. Each of the 18 prints in the exhibition, featuring distinct, vibrant orchids. Every image has been dedicated to a different woman in science, technology, engineering or mathematics, with an inscription describing her contribution to the world. A former fashion photographer, Lange is based in New York. "Big Blooms" runs until Sunday, Oct. 28, in the Krehbiel Gallery.

Both exhibitions are located in the Regenstein Center at the Chicago Botanic Garden. To learn more about art at the Garden, visit www.chicagobotanic.org/exhibitions.
