Frum, Manzano place fourth in events at IHSA girls state track and field

Glenbrook North's Juliet Frum broke her own school record last weekend at the Illinois High School Association girls track and field state final meet.

Running the seventh-fastest time in the Class 3A 1600-meter run in May 19 preliminaries at Eastern Illinois University's O'Brien Stadium, the sophomore returned for Saturday's finals.

Breaking her own Spartans record she'd set April 22 at Distance Night in Palatine, Frum ran the metric mile in 4 minutes, 54.69 seconds for a fourth-place finish in Charleston.

It was Frum's first all-state finish in track after placing 11th in the 1600 in 2022, two spots off the top nine. Second last fall in Class 3A cross country, Frum is a two-time all-stater in that sport.

A tight race in which the top seven girls all finished within about two seconds of each other, Hersey senior Anna Harden won the 1600 in 4:53.14.

Joining Frum with a fourth-place finish in Charleston, New Trier's Gaby Manzano did what an athlete almost has to do to reach the finals - establish a new personal or seasonal best.

Manzano did that in long jump, right off the bat in Friday's preliminaries. Her first attempt was marked at 5.58 meters (18 feet, 3¾ inches), establishing a new PR and sending the junior into the finals with a mark more than four inches farther than her 10th-place finish at the 2022 state meet.

The mark carried over to Saturday and Manzano finished in fourth, behind third-place Charlotte Deines of Prospect, who with Manzano qualified out of the 3A Glenbrook South sectional.

Manzano earned a second all-state honor in the last event of the weekend when she led off the Trevians' ninth-place 1600 meter relay, with Carly McConnell, Katie Sarnoff and Calli Chiarelli.

New Trier's 3200 relay also reached the finals. Eva Scarborough, Josie Cahill, Anna Rivera and Clare Finnegan placed 10th at 9 minutes, 28.86 seconds.

Loyola's Makena Coltoff, a Marquette-bound senior, reached the Class 3A finals in the 300 hurdles in a personal-record 44.67 seconds. In the finals, Coltoff earned all-state honors with her seventh-place finish of 45.60 seconds.

In the 3200, run on Saturday, Coltoff's teammate, sophomore Jane Lynch, placed 13th in 11:00.14.

In Class 2A, Regina Dominican's Haneefa Adam placed seventh in triple jump. The senior launched her top effort on her second attempt in Friday's preliminaries, of 10.94 meters (35 feet, 11¼ inches).

Adam's mark carried over to Saturday, earning her a second all-state honor following her fifth-place triple jump of 11.02 meters (36-1¾) at the 2022 state meet.

Huntley won the Class 3A championship with 62.5 points, ahead of Prospect (52), the Glenbrook South sectional champion.

Kankakee's girls won Class 2A. Winnebago won Class 1A in a close meet with Seneca, 50 points to 48.
