Kane rallies Hawks for 5-4 OT victory over Red Wings

The Blackhawks blew a 4-1 third-period lead, but Patrick Kane scored his second goal of the game with 2:18 remaining in overtime to lift his team to a 5-4 victory over host Detroit on Wednesday.

After Jonathan Toews drove the net and had his shot saved, he recovered the puck and sent it to a charging Erik Gustafsson, who instantly passed to Kane. The superstar one-timed a shot past Jonathan Bernier to give the Hawks (26-26-9) their 10th win in the last 12 games.

Kane also extended his point streak to 19 games when he put the Hawks up 4-1 at 1:17 of the second period.

The Hawks took that lead into the third period and appeared to have things well in hand, but Detroit charged back with 2 goals in 64 seconds by Dylan Larkin and Andreas Athanasiou. Then with Bernier out for an extra attacker, Athanasiou scored again with just 1:26 remaining.

Artem Anisimov, Brandon Saad and Alex DeBrincat scored first-period goals for the Hawks. DeBrincat, who had 5 points in an 8-7 victory over Ottawa on Monday, has 22 goals in the last 30 games.

Cam Ward, who made 31 saves, registered the 12th assist of his career on Saad's goal.

What Kane is doing is truly remarkable. Three years ago, when he hit 19 straight games with a point, it was a huge story because he passed Eddie Olczyk and Phil Kessel for the longest streak by an American-born player.

Now, here he is again and is just 7 shy of tying his own mark.

Kane has 42 points (16 goals, 26 assists) during this run and is up to 92 points on the season. During that 26-game streak in 2015-16, Kane had 40 points.

On his second-period goal Wednesday, Kane exploded through the defensive zone with eight powerful strides that set up a 2-on-1 rush with Toews. Kane went from the defensive blue line to the right faceoff dot in the offensive zone in just 3.1 seconds, and ripped a shot that easily beat starting goalie Jimmy Howard.

• Drake Caggiula suffered a facial injury when Jonathan Toews' stick got under Caggiula's face mask during the first period. He did not return.
