Girls volleyball: Hersey second at Maine East Invite

Two days after taking over first place in the Mid-Suburban League East girls volleyball standings, Hersey took second place at the Maine East Blue Demon Invite in Park Ridge on Saturday.

The Huskies (12-4) defeated De La Salle 25-17 17-25 25-13 in the semifinals before Naperville North topped Hersey 25-13 25-21 in the championship.

The Huskies went 4-1 on the day and were led by Kati Kaburov (47 kills, 10 aces), Juliette van den Herik (18 kills, 15 blocks), Nora Zielke (12 kills, 3 blocks), Kate Lubbe (11 kills, 10 blocks) and Janine Boyan (10 kills, 15 blocks) on attack.

Alessia Olhava (63 assists) and Kaiya Eshoo (42 assists, 6 aces) handled the setting duties.

Maddie Mullin (77 digs) and Kaburov (28) led in the back row. Hersey.

"It was a strong tournament for us," said Hersey coach Nancy Lill. "We played solid volleyball in pool play and made it to the championship match for the second straight year, losing to an outstanding Naperville North team."

Prospect (6-7) took sixth place with its wins coming over Oak Forest 25-20, 25-22, Deerfield 25-20, 25-23 and Plainfield East 25-15, 22-25, 15-13.

Grace Cacini and Emma Cogan led the Knights' attack with 33 kills apiece in the five matches while top servers were Emma Cogan (9) and Annie Wiley (8).

Sloane Petlak led with 12 blocks while Cacini and Wiley had 8 apiece.

Setter Sarah Skaggs handed out 74 assists.

Maine West defeated Maine East 22-25, 25-23, 25-23 to win its last match and finish with a 2-3 record.

Leading the Warriors were Ally Block (78 assists, 10 kills, 32 digs), Clare Olson (32 digs), Reilly Olson (30 kills, 32 digs), Kaylin Johnson (48 digs, 5 aces), Angela Dugalic (30 kills, 11 blocks), Sam Parcell (9 kills, 7 blocks) and Ellie Centella (9 kills, 3 blocks). Maine West is 8-8 overall.

Leyden placed 14th out of the 16 teams with a 1-4 record. The Eagles' lone win came over Proviso East 25-8, 25-13.

Leading the Eagles in the five matches were junior middle Kinga Nowaczyk (12 kills), senior middle hitter Jenna Meyer (10 kills), senior outside hitter Destiny Corral (22 kills, 9 aces), Bea Verin (34 digs, 4 aces), junior outside hitter Jailynn Bravo (10 kills) and junior setter Jocelyn Escamilla (54 assists, 4 aces).

Belvidere North tourney: Barrington raised its record to 9-7 by taking second place in the tourney. The Fillies went 3-0 in pool play.

St. Viator Invite: The host Lions (8-11) went 3-2 and took fifth place in their own tourney.

Carrie Leazer (44 kills), Kate Nottoli (32 kills) and Vicky Gorny (26 kills) led the attack set by Erin Aldana (122 assists) and Katerine Drab (5 assists).

Nottoli was the Lions' top blocker with 7 while the back row was paced by Leazer (46 digs), Aldana (20 digs) and Gorney (20 digs).

Leazer also had a team-high 11 aces followed by Lauren Allaire (9) and Aldana (8).

Rolling Meadows (11-11) was 2-3 in the tourney and placed seventh.

Bolingbrook went 5-0 to win the 10-team event.

Niles West/ Resurrection Invite: Buffalo Grove (9-8) went 3-2 in the tourney, getting the final win in three sets over co-host Resurrection 25-19, 23-25, 25-12. BG setter Maggie Streckert handed out 20 assists against the Bandits and served 4 aces.

The Bison were led on attack by Claire Ferriss (12 kills), Shannon Coglianese (7) and Hannah Arbitman (6).
