Girls volleyball: Palatine wins Antioch Invite

Coming off its biggest conference win over Schaumburg on Thursday night, Palatine's girls volleyball team kept the momentum flowing on Saturday near the Wisconsin border.

The Pirates (19-8) traveled to the Antioch Invite and came back with the title, capping a 5-0 run with a 24-26, 25-22, 15-11 win over Lakes in the championship match.

That title contest was one of four three-set wins for Palatine, which coincidentally had dropped four three-set matches in the Mid-Suburban West.

Coach Dan Gavin's squad went 3-0 in pool play with wins over Deerfield (25-18, 25-17), Antioch (25-9, 22-25, 15-13) and Zion-Benton (23-25, 25-22, 15-10).

at Huntley: Barrington (17-10) defeated Harvest Christian Academy 25-20, 25-22 for third place at the Huntley Invite.

The Fillies (17-10) recorded wins over Lake Zurich (16-25, 25-20, 25-15), Rockford Boylan (25-11, 25-10) and Sycamore (25-12, 25-17) in pool play before falling to Crystal Lake Central (25-27, 25-27) in the semifinals.

Andi Capel (42 kills, 40 digs, 33 points), Bailey Madrzyk ( 28 kills, 29 points), Suzana Andrade de Oliveira (53 digs), Tara Kozak ( 98 assists), Peyton Tilly (28 kills), Paige Ramel (12 kills, 10 blocks) and Kate Shechtman(6 kills, 8 blocks) were among the leaders for the Fillies.

"We got a little tired in the third-place match because we expended so much energy in the semifinal match against Crystal Lake Central," said Barrington coach Michelle Jakubowski. "I liked the way we fought all day. It was a really productive day and we feel we are ready for the postseason."

at Schaumburg: St. Viator added to its impressive record with three more wins at the Schaumburg Invite on Saturday.

The Lions went 3-2 to raise their overall mark to 24-8 as they defeated Bartlett, Grant and the host Saxons in two sets.

Catherine Hickey led the Lions attack by converting 198-of-210 for 59 kills.

Next highest was Michaela Mueller who punched out 36 kills, followed by Kate Nottoli (19 kills), Kendall Claffey (17 kills) and Rina Rodriquez (12).

Leading the Lions at the service line was Carrie Leazer with 9 aces, followed by Hickey (8), Nottoli (6) and Taylor Pfaller (6).

Mueller led with 4 blocks while handing out 124 assists from 475 sets.

Leazer's 67 digs paced the back row followed by Hickey (32), Pfaller (22) and Rodriquez (17).

at Glenbrook North: Buffalo Grove went 2-3 at the Glenbrook North Discovery tournament getting wins over Rolling Meadows on Friday and Maine West on Saturday in Northbrook.

The Bison (12-11) pulled out a 19-25, 25-19, 27-25 win over Maine West as Claire Ferriss led the attack with 15 kills.

Teammates Nicole Langer and Lauren Horvath each added 10 kills while setter Maggie Steckert handed out 36 assists from 102 sets.

Riley Cross and Nina Masciopinto led the back row with 11 digs apiece followed by Ferriss (7), Steckert (6) and Kristen Belias (9).

Mary Nowlan was the top blocker for BG with 4 while she also collected 3 kills. Ferriss had 3 blocks and Abigail Kim 2.

• Maine West went 1-1 on Saturday with a win in its last match of the invite over Evanston (25-18, 25-19).

The Warriors (16-11) went 2-3 and finished 11th.

Jessica Riedl (36 kills, 8 blocks, 12 digs, 4 aces), Reilly Olson (43 kills, 26 digs), Sophia Saldana (51 digs, 3 aces), Amanda Grzebien (30 digs, 10 kills, 5 aces), Ally Block (9 assists, 6 aces, 19 digs) and Christy Kolosvary (28 digs, 20 assists, 6 aces) were top performers for West.

• Rolling Meadows (14-18) won its final match of the invite (25-19, 25-12) over Niles North to finish 1-4 and take 15th place.

Leading the Mustangs' attack in the five matches were Eleanor Errico (27 kills), Natalie Klancnik (26) Elise Kowalski (19) and Natalie Anderson (16) while Klancnik (42 assists) and Mallory King (41 assists) handled the setting chores.

Macie Robinson paced the Mustangs in aces (12) and digs (81) while Errico was tops in blocks (8) followed by Leticia Avellaneda (6).

• Prospect also went 1-4 in the invite, getting its win over Rolling Meadows 16-25, 25-17, 25-19.

Meghan Meredith led the Knights' attack in the five matches putting down 25 kills, followed by Sloane Petlak (19),Grace Cacini (18), Elizabeth Abraham (10) and Emma Cogan (8).

Sophomore setter Casey Acosta handed out 67 assists while Val Thomas led the back row with 70 digs followed by Acosta (19).
