Glenview, Northbrook briefs: Traveling sukkah; Glenview Winter Wear Drive

Lubavitch Chabad rolls out traveling sukkah

Sukkot, the Festival of the Booths, is a seven-day Jewish holiday celebrated by eating in a sukkah, a temporary structure covered with vegetation or bamboo that commemorates the time Jews spent in the desert and the clouds that surrounded them.

This year Sukkot begins on Friday evening and lasts until nightfall on Oct. 6.

Rabbi Meir Moscowitz of Lubavitch Chabad of Northbrook is rolling out a traveling sukkah, constructed in the back of a pickup truck to bring the holiday to the people.

Moscowitz plans to bring Sukkot to shopping centers, offices and senior residences, where people may not have access to a sukkah booth. He'll have a light snack available to celebrate the holiday, as well as the "Four Species" of plant life - palm, willow, myrtle and citron fruit - to create a Sukkot blessing.

"Bringing the sukkah to the streets enables so many more people to participate," Moscowitz said. "The traveling sukkah will bring holiday joy to hundreds."

The drive is a collaboration between Glenview District 34, District 34's Parent Teacher Association, Glenbrook South High School's Titans Helping Titans, the Debra Gelfand Children's Foundation, and Youth Services. Upcoming park district performing arts productions include:

• "SpongeBob the Musical: Youth Edition," an all-singing, all-dancing stage show that puts the spotlight on the power of optimism, Oct. 24-26.

• "A Christmas Carol: A Live Radio Play," in which the Charles Dickens classic comes alive as a live 1940s broadcast complete with vintage commercials, Dec. 16.

• A series of one-day workshops that will give a behind-the-scenes look at the magic of makeup for theater.
