New Superintendent Emily Tammaru wasted no time keeping her vow to visit Northbrook/Glenview Elementary District 30 schools and classrooms on the first day of classes Wednesday.

She started making rounds at 8:15 a.m. greeting students at Wescott School in Northbrook, then spoke at an 8:45 a.m. indoor assembly at Northbrook's Maple School.

About a half-hour later she addressed an outdoor assembly for students at Willowbrook School in Glenview, and headed back to Wescott for midmorning "Popsicles on the Playground" with the kindergartners.

A 27-year educator, Tammaru replaced retired District 30 Superintendent Brian Wegley. The District 30 school board approved her appointment on Dec. 15 out of 27 candidates identified by a search firm.

She previously was superintendent of Glen Ellyn District 89, serving kindergarten through eighth-grade students in Glen Ellyn, Lombard and Wheaton.

This week marks a return to school for students at Northbrook District 28 who also had their first day of classes Wednesday.

On Thursday, students will return to classrooms in Northbrook District 27, West Northfield District 31, Glenview District 34 and Glenbrook High School District 225.

Meanwhile, classes started last Thursday for Loyola Academy and on Monday for Regina Dominican and New Trier high schools.
