Bahá'í House of Worship to celebrate Black History Month with music, art

In celebration of Black History Month, the Bahá'í House of Worship in Wilmette will host a music and art program Saturday.

The Bahá'í Temple Choir and the Lincolnwood Chamber Orchestra will perform musical selections by Black composers. Guests from North Shore racial justice groups also will participate.

A "pop-up" art gallery will showcase Black Bahá'í contributions to art, history and humanity. The gallery will be available for viewing before and after the roughly two-hour event.

The free event will be held at 7 p.m. in the temple's lower-level Foundation Hall at 100 Linden Ave. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. A reception will follow.

This year's national theme of Black History Month is "Black Resistance" - how African Americans have resisted historic and ongoing oppression, especially racial terrorism.

Toward this theme, the Bahá'í House of Worship will explore how Bahá'í African Americans have resisted apathy, social and public pressures for division, hopelessness, exclusion, and dilution to contribute to the advancement of all, the event listing said.
