Performer's School now accepting enrollment for Filmmaking for Social Change

The Performer's School, the Highwood-based, premier acting school for children, is now accepting enrollment for its acclaimed Filmmaking for Social Change course. The classes run 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays, April 30-May 21.

To conclude, students will participate in two all-day professional film shoots on Saturday, May 28, and Sunday, May 29. The series, "Kids Matter: Looking into Labels," will be taught by Adria Dawn, award-winning filmmaker who has been in the industry for more than 10 years, produced more than 20 films, live theater shows and a comedy web series.

"Students will have a hands-on experience in the film industry, where they will be able to begin their craft in a long successful career," said Stacey Flaster, co-founder of The Performer's School. "This experience is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience."

The curriculum includes writing, directing, brainstorming and acting - all within a team setting. Students will touch all parts of the filmmaking process, including the creation of content and bringing it to life.

"This is an incredible and unique opportunity for kids to learn the art of creating and acting in a film with timely content," said Liz Fauntleroy, co-founder of The Performer's School.

The content revolves around understanding sexual preferences, communicating that to others, expanding labels and pronouns, and what it means to be queer, pansexual, heterosexual, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and more. This class is for any child - straight, gay, those who aren't sure yet, and for those who have always known, etc. It's all-inclusive for those who identify as a he, she, they, or any pronouns that make a person feel whole. Collectively, the students will examine the pros and cons of labels, and how to embrace the unique qualities that make every individual amazing.

"The film industry intrigues students, especially when it revolves around pertinent issues," said Adria. "More and more are interested in seeing how the film process starts and develops."
