A World of Innovation - Building the 1893 World's Fair: 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, at Winnetka-Northfield Public Library, 768 Oak St., Winnetka. In the six months the World's Fair was open, no fewer than 26 million visitors from around the world passed through its gleaming gates. In less than two years, Chicago pulled off the singular feat of converting little more than marsh into a city-within-in-a-city, replete with moving sidewalks, potable water and inventions to boggle the mind, including a ride called the Ferris wheel that could hold upward of 2,000 passengers at a time. Longtime Chicago Architecture Center docent Kevin Griebenow will discuss just how remarkable the fair was, and why the Windy City has always been second to none.
