Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire: Virtually at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, through Ezra-Habonim, the Niles Township Jewish Congregation. The Men's Club will host virtually Professor Pamela Nadell, from American University, who will present the lecture, "The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire: Out of Tragedy Comes Social Justice." In March, 1911, a horrific fire broke out in Manhattan's Garment District. Within one-half hour, 146 women, (mostly young Jewish immigrant women) were dead. This fire capped years of protests by workers against the intolerable conditions they endured. It propelled a powerful coalition of New York businessmen to enact safety legislation that would become a model for the nation.
