HERALD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: GLENBROOK NORTH'S ROBBY O'REGAN

Glenbrook North junior golfer Robby O'Regan claimed medalist honors at the Class 3A Glenbrook North regional Sept. 29 at Heritage Oaks Golf Club in Northbrook.

Shooting an even-par 70 over 18 holes, O'Regan then beat New Trier's James Pryor and Maine South's Myles LaHart in a three-way playoff for the title.

O'Regan rallied through 18 by going 4-under-par over the last 13 holes.

"He hangs in there and does not give up. A real grinder," said Spartans coach Justin Gerbich. "He has had a few rounds where he has struggled early but stayed positive and turned it around."

O'Regan, whose brother, Kevin, is a freshman on the Notre Dame men's golf team, went on to score a 2-under-par 70 at the Class 3A Lyons sectional on Monday at Prairie Bluff Golf Club in Crest Hill.

That was good for an eighth-place tie behind golfers including teammate Eli Myers, Loyola's Ryan Banas, New Trier's Pryor and Noah Zyung, and tying him with Glenbrook South's Chase Blanchard.

A member of Glenbrook North's team that last fall won conference, regional and sectional titles (state finals were not held), Robby O'Regan on Monday helped the Spartans qualify for the state finals an 11th time with their second-place team finish at Prairie Bluff, 2 strokes behind New Trier.

O'Regan and teammate Jason Gordon were freshmen on the team that finished second in Class 3A in 2019, Glenbrook North's highest state golf finish to date.

"Robby has been playing great for us all year," Gerbich said. "He has been so consistent and solid all season."
