Two firefighters injured in structure fire near Mundelein

Two firefighters were injured in a structure fire near Mundelein Saturday morning, authorities said.

The Countryside Fire Protection District said Sunday one of the firefighters was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while the other did not require treatment.

Firefighters responded to a report of a structure fire in the 26000 block of Maple Ave around 9:20 a.m., according to a news release from the fire department. When crews arrived, they found a fire on the roof toward the back of the house and a power line down in the backyard.

While ComEd secured the downed electrical lines, crews entered the empty house and extinguished the fire, the news release said.

The people who lived there evacuated before crews arrived, but two firefighters were injured while putting out the blaze, according to the news release. One was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The building is uninhabitable, and the Red Cross is assisting the family while the Countryside Fire Protection District continues to investigate the cause of the fire.
