McHenry man pleads guilty to sexually assaulting child, sentenced to 40 years

A 25-year-old McHenry man pleaded guilty Wednesday to the predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and was sentenced to 40 years in prison, the McHenry County State's Attorney's Office said in a news release Thursday.

Matthew Reder was arrested in February 2020 after barricading himself in the bathroom of a Crystal Lake apartment and threatening police officers with a knife. At the time, Reder was accused of filming and photographing himself engaging in sexual activity with a child who was younger than 13, court records show.

Reder's sentence was part of a negotiated plea approved by McHenry County Judge Michael Coppedge, according to the release. Reder is required to serve at least 85% of his sentence under the state's truth-in-sentencing guidelines.

In exchange for Reder's guilty plea, prosecutors dismissed several Class X felony child pornography charges against the man.

Upon his release from prison, Reder will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, according to the release.

This case was investigated by Crystal Lake police Detective Dave Eitel and prosecuted by Randi Freese of the McHenry County State's Attorney's Office, according to the release.
