Lake County authorities on Tuesday identified 54-year-old Michael Gaul of McHenry as the man found dead Friday after the SUV he was driving veered off the road and struck a tree near Wauconda.

Authorities say Gaul was behind the wheel of a 2016 Lincoln MKC traveling west on West Neville Road about 11 a.m. Friday when it went off the road, hit the tree and rolled back onto the roadway near Darrell Road.

An autopsy conducted Tuesday determined Gaul suffered a fatal medical event prior to the crash, Lake County Coroner Howard Cooper said.

Toxicology results are pending, and the crash remains under investigation by the coroner and Lake County sheriff's office.

"We have been in close contact with Mr. Gaul's family, and our deepest condolences go out to them during this difficult time. This is truly a tragedy," Cooper said in a news release.

Gaul was the only person in the SUV, authorities said.
