Glen Ellyn man faces prison time after pleading guilty to drug-induced homicide

A Glen Ellyn man faces six to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to drug-induced homicide.

Jackie Dunklin, 27, of the 300 block of Spruce Lane, entered the blind plea Tuesday and faces sentencing early next year. Dunklin has been held in DuPage County jail since his bail was set at $250,000 on Feb. 7, 2017.

Addison police responded to a call Jan. 1, 2017, on Lorraine Avenue for a report of a male and female suffering from apparent heroin overdoses. When they arrived, officers found James Maulding, an acquaintance of Dunklin's, unresponsive, officials said. He could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman was taken to a hospital where she underwent treatment for approximately six weeks. An investigation led authorities to Dunklin.

"This morning, (Dunklin) accepted responsibility for the overdose death of James Maulding," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a written statement. "To (Maulding's) family and friends, I want to extend my sincerest condolences on their loss. Perhaps Mr. Dunklin's acceptance of responsibility will help them achieve some measure of closure in this very sad, tragic case."

Dunklin's next court date is scheduled for Dec. 17, at which point a sentencing date will likely be set.
