$3 million bail for man accused of shooting at Bloomingdale cops

Bail was set at $3 million Monday morning for a reported gang member with more than 40 previous arrests charged with firing at two officers responding to a domestic dispute Sunday morning in Bloomingdale.

Raymond Vieyra, 42, faces three counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm at a police officer and unlawful use or possession of a weapon by a felon.

Bloomingdale Director of Public Safety Frank Giammarese said police were responding to a domestic violence call about 4:30 a.m. Sunday on the 300 block of Plymouth Lane when Vieyra fired at least six shots at officers.

Prosecutors allege Vieyra exited the garage and began shooting at the officers. One of the officers returned fire. Vieyra then retreated back into the residence. A short time later, Vieyra exited the home with his hands up, and he was arrested.

" (Vieyra's) alleged actions and blatant disregard for law enforcement will be met with the full force and effect of the law," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said after bail was set. "Thankfully, neither of the responding officers were injured by the alleged actions of this defendant. I would like to thank the Bloomingdale Police Department as well as the Major Crimes Task Force for a peaceful resolution to this case."

Giammarese said he was particularly troubled that anyone would "take it upon themselves to fire at police officers responding to a call for service."

"We have a wonderful community and we welcome everyone to our community," Giammarese said Monday. "But we will not welcome people who are known gang members who take it upon themselves to shoot at police or anyone else."

Vieyra is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges Nov. 14 before DuPage County Judge John Kinsella. If convicted, Vieyra would face between 10 and 45 years in prison.
