Christmas in the Square Saturday in Huntley

The village of Huntley will host its second annual Christmas in the Square event from 1-7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5.

Activities on and around the corner of Coral and Woodstock streets include free hayrides and a Kriss Kringle Market from 2-7 p.m., kids' crafts and Christmas stories from 3-7 p.m. in the old village hall. At 4 p.m., Christmas carolers will sing in the decorated gazebo, followed by a tree-lighting ceremony with Santa at 4:45 p.m. Kids can get their photo taken with Santa from 5-7 p.m., and the Friends of the Library will hold its Holiday Book Sale from 1-7 p.m. in the old village hall.

Local theater: Friday through Sunday, Dec. 4, 5 and 6, the FCC Players of the First Congregational Church of Huntley and the Crystal Lake Park District Stagecrafters will present the drama "The Boys Next Door," written by Tom Griffin and directed by Judy Sijerson.

This funny yet touching play focuses on the lives of four men with disabilities who live in a communal residence under the watchful eye of a sincere, but increasingly despairing, social worker.

Tickets for the performance at 6 p.m. Friday and noon Sunday cost $12 and will include a spaghetti dinner. Tickets for the 7 p.m. Saturday cost $8 and do not include a meal.

The dinner and the play will take place in Fellowship Hall at the First Congregational Church, on the corner of Main and Church Streets in Huntley. The public is invited. Call (847) 669-3691 for reservations.

Basket raffle: Beautiful gift baskets are now on display for the Holiday Basket Fundraiser sponsored by the Friends of the Huntley Area Library. Raffle tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5.

You can stop by the library to view the baskets from now until Friday, Dec. 11, when the winning names will be drawn at the library's Holiday Open House. The free party runs from 6-8 p.m. Dec. 11 with music by Dave Gutshall, balloon creations, refreshments, crafts for children, and a special guest from the North Pole. All ages are welcome, and everyone will get a free book to keep.

Santa Breakfast: The District 158 Education Foundation will hold its popular Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, Dec. 5, at Marlowe Middle School.

Last year's event sold out, so this year there will be two seatings, from 8 to 9:30 a.m., and from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

The $5 per person ticket includes a continental breakfast, a family picture with Santa and Mrs. Claus, crafts, raffles, games and music. There will also be a raffle for gift baskets created by staff members at each school in the district.

Proceeds will benefit the Foundation's education enhancement grants and scholarships. Order your tickets on the Foundation's "hotline" at (847) 659-5800, stop by one of the district's elementary schools, or e-mail d158foundation@comcast.net.
