Local artists sought for show at Algonquin Commons

A local resident is hoping to bring one-of-a-kind artwork to the Randall Road corridor next month.

Diane Magerko is working in conjunction with the folks at Algonquin Commons to host an art festival on Aug. 16 and 17 at the shopping center.

The goal is to host an upscale, juried art show, showcasing the works of many local artists, Magerko said.

The art work would be on display at the outdoor shopping center, so those shopping at the businesses could also browse the art work.

A portion of the proceeds from the event, she said, would be donated to the District 300 Foundation for Education Excellence.

If successful, Magerko said, she's hoping the art festival will become an annual event.

But first it needs to get started, she said.

She was hoping for 30 to 40 artists, but still needs a few more to meet that goal.

"The first year of something like this is always a tough year, but there's got to be a first year at some point," Magerko said. "We want to make this a good show, and we are hoping that more people will participate.

"We're looking for all kinds of mediums - fiber, wood, watercolor, oil - the whole gamut. We really want to show people what talented artists we have out here."

Also, from 10 to 2 p.m. Thursday, the crew members will be offering a grill demonstration at the front of the store.

Joining forces: Morkes Chocolates and Come & Dish are teaming up Tuesday to make sure you have both your meal and your dessert taken care of.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and again from 6 to 8 p.m. you can stop by to decorate your own chocolate suckers for $5 per person at Morkes, and prepare pizza in a crockpot for $10.95 at Come & Dish.
