Save-A-Pet's Run For the Sun 5K helps fund no-kill shelter's programs

Second chances can be hard to come by, especially for an animal of a certain age or temperament.

But Save-A-Pet, a no-kill rescue in Grayslake, believes every animal is worth the effort. The shelter does not discriminate against age, health, or any breeds when it comes to rescuing our four-legged friends.

With a wide network of professional caregivers, the facility does everything it can to help animals who have been lost, abandoned or injured heal physically and emotionally before finding them a forever home.

It takes a lot of funding to do this special work, and Save-A-Pet works strictly on generous donations and grants. To help, the organization will host its Save-A-Pet Run For the Sun 5K on June 19.

Deb Rabine, development manager for Save-A-Pet, talks about the upcoming fundraiser and the shelter it benefits.

Q: What is the Save-A-Pet? Give a brief overview of what the organization does and who you serve.

A: Save-A-Pet is a true no-kill animal rescue and adoption center. We are located in Grayslake and have been serving Lake County and the surrounding area for 49 years.

In that time we have rescued, rehabilitated and found forever homes for 65,000 dogs and cats.

To learn more, visit www.saveapetil.org and follow us on social media.

Q: Where do the majority of your donations come from?

A: Save-A-Pet is funded primarily by donations from individuals, as well as some grants. We receive no government funding.

Q: Tell us about the Save-A-Pet Run For the Sun 5K. How does it work?

A: The Run For the Sun 5K run and fun walk is one of our major fundraising events in 2021. Although we advertise the date as June 19, this is a virtual event, which means participants can choose to run, walk or even dance to their goal at any day, time and place of their choosing.

They have the option of posting their personal results and photos on our race page at saveapetil.org/, but it is not necessary to do so.

Q: How can people participate?

A: Registration for the virtual event is just $25. All participants receive a backpack, race shirt, paw-shaped participation medal and some other fun surprise items. They can register using this link: bit.ly/Save-A-PetRunFurTheSun. Once registered, participants have the option to create a team and/or to solicit pledges for their efforts.

Q: How can readers help if they can't participate in the event?

A: If people are unable to participate, they can still support Save-A-Pet with a donation at saveapetil.org/.

Q: What else would you like readers to know?

A: Save-A-Pet is a true no-kill rescue. We do not temperament test our dogs and cats, nor do we discriminate against age, health, or any breeds. Our adoption center provides high-quality care for our rescued animals to help them heal physically and emotionally.

Through our network of animal care providers, including local veterinarians, veterinary specialists, behaviorists, and trainers, each cat or dog has the opportunity to heal based on their unique needs.

In addition, we work very hard to ensure that each adoption is a successful and long-term placement for our animals. Every successful adoption represents the success of our mission and efforts in saving the lives of cats and dogs that otherwise wouldn't have had a chance.
