Makana Breastfeeding to house new milk depot and dispensary for Oak Brook residents

Families in Oak Brook and the surrounding area will now be able to purchase pasteurized human donor milk or donate their excess breast milk at Makana Breastfeeding.

Mothers' Milk Bank of the Western Great Lakes (Milk Bank WGL) has partnered with Makana Breastfeeding to provide these services, in an effort to continue making a difference in the lives of premature and at-risk babies throughout Illinois and Wisconsin. To celebrate this collaboration, Makana Breastfeeding hosted a grand opening on Friday, Aug. 12.

"I'm delighted to be partnering with the dedicated team at Milk Bank WGL to ensure that babies get the best start in life and families in the western suburbs have both access to receive and donate liquid gold in a convenient, safe, and nurturing location," said Makana Breastfeeding owner Melissa Schiff, IBCLC, RLC.

Makana Breastfeeding has been providing lactation services to families throughout the Chicago area since 2013, helping thousands of mother and baby dyads onto the road to successful breastfeeding. Schiff recently moved her office to the Oak Brook area and is "excited and honored to have a wonderful space to serve even more families."

"As a resident of the western suburbs, this partnership gives me so much joy," said Jinnie Hoggarth, Relationship Manager at Milk Bank WGL "I am so happy that families in my community can have such a convenient resource nearby for milk donation and additional breastfeeding services."

In addition to in-home, office, and virtual consults, Makana Breastfeeding offers support services for latching issues, low supply, Therapeutic TummyTime! Method, and more. There is also a breastfeeding blog with tips and other resources for families.

As a depot, Makana Breastfeeding will store and collect milk donations from donors who are screened and approved through Milk Bank WGL. The donations are then sent to the milk bank, where they are pasteurized to eliminate viruses and bacteria.

The site will also serve as a dispensary, where families can purchase pasteurized donor human milk. Donor milk is an essential nutritional therapy that provides numerous benefits, including infection-fighting factors, growth hormones, and improved nutrition and digestion.

Approved donors and families interested in dropping off milk or purchasing milk should call or text Melissa at (773) 575-2629 to schedule a date and time to meet. Individuals who are interested in becoming a donor through Milk Bank WGL can visit the milk bank's website at www.milkbankwgl.org.

Makana Breastfeeding is located at 1010 Jorie Blvd., Suite 243 in Oak Brook. For more, call (773) 575-2629 or visit www.makanabreastfeeding.com.
