Bloomingdale library to host grand opening for two new spaces

Join the Bloomingdale Public Library on Saturday, Sept. 25, for the grand opening celebration of two new spaces: the Dominic Froio Memorial Garden and the BPL Makerspace.

Stop by for the ribbon cutting at 10 a.m. and stay to enjoy treats, crafts, live entertainment, and more!

The Dominic Froio Memorial Garden is a new outdoor space for all to enjoy, made possible by the generous donation Bloomingdale Public Library received from the estate of Dominic Froio, a long-time resident of Bloomingdale. His passion for cultural exchange and celebrating the arts is evidenced in part by his long tradition of supporting the Bloomingdale Public Library, his support of artist groups in Mexico, and his support and participation in local non-profits. Dominic lost his daughter, Donna Beth, to cancer at the age of 16 years old. Subsequent to that he devoted much of his energy and money to promoting charity work. The Froio Memorial Garden pays homage to what Dominic held most dear to him, his daughter, and an embrace of cultural diversity. The 16 Dragonfly Wings of the canopies symbolize each of the years that Dominic's daughter, Donna Beth, spent living. The colors of the dragonfly wings are a celebration of the diversity of cultures and ethnicities that comprise the fabric of our society. This outdoor space will expand patron programming and will include an Illinois Department of Natural Resources-certified butterfly garden, innovative lighting, and outdoor seating with Wi-Fi access.

The BPL Makerspace is a creative space free for Bloomingdale Public Library cardholders. Equipment such as craft cutters, heat press, fabric die cutters, and more are available for cardholders to use. Staff will be available for equipment training by appointment.

This event is free and open to the public.

Current COVID-19 protocols will be followed at library events. For more information regarding either of these spaces, contact Tim Jarzemsky, library director, at (630) 924-2722 or visit www.mybpl.org.
