CSL South baseball trio earns all-state honors

Glenbrook North's Eric Orloff, Glenbrook South's George Korompilas and New Trier's Alex Calarco each were named to the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association 2021 Class 4A All-State Team.

Orloff, the Central Suburban League South pitcher of the year, was 7-2 this season with a 1.15 earned-run average. The Spartans supplied only 1 run apiece in his two losses.

Headed to the University of Arizona, in 48.2 innings pitched, Orloff struck out 99 batters while walking 17 and allowing 22 hits.

Glenbrook North's most valuable player and an all-region selection, in two playoff appearances Orloff was 2-0 with an astounding 24 strikeouts and 2 hits in 9.1 innings.

Korompilas, a slugging senior first baseman, will play his college ball at Bradley University.

All-conference in the CSL South for the league-champion Titans, the cleanup hitter hit 17 doubles, 7 home runs, scored 28 runs and drove in 51. He batted .390 with a slugging-plus-on base percentage of 1.176.

"He is a leader, one of the hardest-working athletes on our team, and carries himself in a manner that exemplifies GBS baseball both on the field and in the classroom," Glenbrook South coach Steve Stanicek said.

New Trier senior Alex Calarco was voted the player of the year in the Central Suburban League South division.

The Northwestern-bound catcher compiled a .416 batting average, drew 39 bases on balls, and hit 8 home runs and drove in 36 runs.

A Trevians team captain, Calarco also was voted as his team's most valuable player.

"He is a true leader and a better teammate," said New Trier coach Mike Napoleon.
