US News hospital report ranks NorthShore 6th in state
The NorthShore University HealthSystem placed sixth in Illinois in the 2020 rankings of the annual U.S. News & World Report hospitals assessment released Tuesday.
While not nationally ranked, the hospital system, which includes NorthShore Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview, was rated “high performing” in six adult specialties and eight procedures and conditions, the magazine said.
NorthShore was described as “high performing” in gastroenterology and GI surgery; geriatrics; nephrology; neurology and neurosurgery; orthopedics; and urology.
The hospital system did not win a rating in six overall adult specialties: cancer treatment; cardiology and heart surgery; diabetes and endocrinology; ear, nose and throat; gynecology; and pulmonology and lung surgery.
While not ranked in cardiology and heart surgery, NorthShore's treatment in three cardiac areas was described as “high performing”: heart failure; aortic valve surgery; and heart bypass surgery. It's treatment in two other cardiac areas, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair and transcatheter aortic valve replacement, was considered “average.”
It was labeled “high performing” in treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; colon cancer surgery; hip replacement; knee replacement; and lung cancer surgery.
NorthShore's advanced technology was considered “excellent” in cancer care; diabetes and endocrinology; gynecology; neurology and neurosurgery; and urology. Its advanced technology was described as “above average” in gastroenterology and GI surgery; nephrology; and pulmonology and lung surgery. NorthShore's technology rating dropped to “average” in cardiology and orthopedics.
In almost all treatment specialties, the hospital system's 30-day survival rate was considered “excellent.” The lone exceptions were gynecology and urology, where it was assessed as “above average,” and diabetes and endocrinology, where it was described as “average.”
Across the board, the staffing level of nurses was rated as “average.”
“U.S. News generates hospital rankings by evaluating data on nearly 5,000 hospitals in 16 adult medical specialties, nine adult procedures or conditions and 10 pediatric specialties,” the magazine said. “To be nationally ranked in a specialty, a hospital must excel in caring for the sickest, most medically complex patients. In most specialties, the top 50 hospitals are nationally ranked and additional hospitals may be recognized as high performing. Hospitals that do well in multiple areas of adult care may be ranked in their state and metro area. The ratings in procedures and conditions focus on typical Medicare patients and eligibility is based on the number of patients treated.
