McHenry softball donates 100 meals to hospital staff

The McHenry High School softball team partnered with a local business to provide about 100 meals to staff at Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital as a show of support for health care workers during the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic.

The effort was organized by softball team parent Mollie Lard, who reached out to coach Mikaela Mitsch and Don's Subs in McHenry. Softball parents and friends could donate to the effort by calling Don's Subs, and Don's Subs matched donations.

They brought the food, which included sandwiches and cupcakes, to the hospital on April 8.

"I think everybody wants to do something," said Lard, whose daughter Kyra is a junior at McHenry High School. "We can make a bigger impact as a team and do more as a group."

Lard said it was also a nice opportunity to help Don's Subs, which opened recently in downtown McHenry. And Lard said she's hoping the effort inspires others to do similar things for essential workers and local businesses.
