Local lawyer to share tips for new attorneys in webinar

Kerry Lavelle, founding partner of Lavelle Law in Schaumburg, will host a webinar for the Young Lawyers Division of the American Bar Association in which he will share practical tips for attorneys in their first two years of practicing law. The webinar, "The Reliable Associate," will take place Sept. 18.

During the webinar, Lavelle will share insights on how to make a good impression during an associate's first year of practice, including how to work with partners, senior associates and staff, and how to produce high-quality work.

Lavelle has published two books through the American Bar Association, including "The Early-Career Guide for Attorneys: Starting and Building a Successful Career in Law." He is also a featured speaker at conferences across the country and launched Lavelle Consulting, a practice group that focuses on helping law firms improve their overall performance.

• Northbrook resident Stanley McCracken, a longtime educator and clinician, is being recognized with the 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Association of Social Workers, Illinois Chapter, for his work which promotes social justice and social change with and on behalf of the people and clients that social workers serve.

McCracken, along with three other awardees, will be honored at an awards ceremony Nov. 5, at the 2019 National Association of Social Workers-Illinois Chapter Statewide Conference taking place at The Westin North Shore in Wheeling.

McCracken is retired from The University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration. He has 40 years experience as clinician, educator and consultant. He has written about psychiatric rehabilitation, addiction, behavioral pharmacology, behavioral medicine, aging, motivational interviewing, and staff training. His current practice interest is supporting healers who work with refugees and immigrants; veterans; older adults; and individuals in behavioral health and medical settings. He consults with staff at Asian Human Services, Hanul Family Alliance, and Rush University. He is on the board of directors of Lake County Veterans and Family Services Foundation and the professional advisory group for Advocate Condell Hospital Clinical Pastoral Education.

• Jeff Janda was appointed executive director of the Streamwood Park District. Janda comes to the Streamwood Park District with 24 years of experience in the park and recreation field, most recently as executive director of the Berwyn Park District. He will officially start his new venture in late October.

The Streamwood Park District serves over 40,000 Streamwood residents, offering hundreds of seasonal programs. Ranging from fitness, aquatics, youth and adult athletics, the Streamwood Park District strives to accommodate the diverse community on a daily basis with a multitude of programs, events and classes. The park district has been serving the Streamwood community since 1966.

• Illinois Bone and Joint Institute welcomed Dr. Sheela Metgud, a fellowship-trained rheumatologist, to its Morton Grove and Wilmette locations.

Metgud was born and raised in New Jersey, completed her medical training at Bharati Vidyapeeth Medical College in Pune, India, and completed her fellowship in Rheumatology at Loyola University.

Metgud offers her expertise in: rheumatology, arthritis, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, connective tissue disease, vasculitis, muscle pain, polymyalgia rheumatica, sarcoidosis, fibromyalgia, sciatica, gout, muscle inflammation, joint pain, scleroderma, systemic lupus erythematous, antiphospholipid syndrome and immune problems of pregnancy.
