'Reading Takes You Everywhere' this summer at the Algonquin library
Let reading take you everywhere this summer, as the Algonquin Area Public Library District presents its annual summer reading program June 1 through July 31.
Cardholders of all ages are invited to explore where reading can take them and earn prizes just for reading, attending library events, and having fun. Registration begins June 1 at both library locations.
Adults receive a gift just for registering and earn freebies and discounts from local businesses for books read. They will receive a T-shirt for reading three books and can enter prize drawings for books read, up to five books.
Teens can register in person with their library card to get their book of choice and then read 10 hours to earn another book. Once teens reach 15 hours of reading, they will earn a "Reading Takes You Everywhere" T-shirt. Continue reading and reach 25 hours for a special invitation to "Pizza & Pages," a teen after-hours party. Teens also earn "book bucks" to enter drawings for gift cards, a Polaroid Photography bundle, and more
Kids from birth through eighth grade receive a small gift for registering, then read and do activities for a chance to spin the prize wheel. Kids who complete the entire program will receive a book and T-shirt for their final prize. Summer reading programs can help maintain literacy levels between school terms - and they make reading fun.
Special summer events held at Harnish Main Library include lunchtime concerts, "Wonder Woman Meet and Greet," and a "Tie Dye" event for all ages.
The Eastgate Branch will host free movies, a "Family Lego Earthquake" competition, live animal presentations, and more.
Out in the community, the library is co-sponsoring "Flick & Float" at the Algonquin Pool and offering story times at places like the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Interfaith Food Pantry and Riverbottom Ice Cream.

Beginning Friday, June 1, look for the library's "rocket ship" on display at Algonquin and Lake in the Hills businesses, organizations and library locations. Find the rocket in a new location to pick up your "location ticket." Collect five tickets and bring them to the library July 30 to Aug. 3 to be entered in the prize drawing!
