Glenview / Glencoe League Begins Lunch Series focusing on November 8 ballott

Sue Kravis, the Cook County League of Women Voters representative, discussed the upcoming referendum to eliminate the Office of the Cook County Recorder of Deeds and transfer the duties to the Office of the Cook County Clerk. The Cook County League urges voters to vote yes to eliminate the Office as it would save at least $1 Million per year and provide efficiencies. There is also no reason for the recording of deeds function to be independent of the other functions overseen by the Clerk.

Another referendum on the November ballot is the proposed amendment to add a new section to the Revenue Article of the Illinois Constitution. In brief, the amendment would prevent road funds (maintenance or construction of roads, bridges, mass transit, etc.) from being used for any other purpose. Since the League has not studied this amendment, it has not taken a position.

Finally, the effort to put re-districting of the Illinois legislative map on a referendum was reviewed by Paula Lawson. Called Independent Maps, the League participated in the effort for the third time. Unfortunately, in a sharply divided 4-3 vote, the Illinois Supreme Court ruled that the referendum did not fit the narrow legal window for citizen initiatives to change the 1970 Constitution. The League and others will have to decide future action.

Upcoming, the topic for the October 18 lunch series is "Where We Are and How We got Here". Can we believe the polls? Are large-scale political realignments happening? These are some of the questions that will all be explored by Richard Day. The lunch will again be held at Hackney's on Lake from 11:30-1 p.m. The Series is open to the public and individuals order and pay on their own. Reservations are required. Please contact Linda Alexander at 312-622-0997.
