Hoffman Estates man held on drug, gun charges

A Hoffman Estates man was ordered held on $100,000 bail on gun and drug possession charges following a traffic stop Sunday.

Davonte Binion, 21, was charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. His passenger, Brittani Taylor, 18, of Rockford was arrested on a charge of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. She was released on a $10,000 I-bond, which means she does not have to pay the money if she shows up for court dates.

After Schaumburg police officers stopped Binion's vehicle on Sunday, they discovered he had no valid driver's license, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Alyssa Grissom.

The officers subsequently recovered 24.8 grams of what they suspect is marijuana from the car, Grissom said. The police also recovered a .22 -aliber revolver from Binion's jacket pocket, Grissom said.

Binion was sentenced to two years of probation for a 2013 robbery. That probation was revoked, and he was sentenced to two years in prison. Binion, who also has several misdemeanors involving possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting a police officer from 2015, was on parole at the time of his arrest.

Taylor has no criminal background, Grissom said.

If convicted of the most serious crime, Binion faces up to seven years in prison. Both defendants next appear in court on June 30.
