6-year-old Wheaton boy dies after crash

A 6-year-old boy, who was severely injured after being struck by a car May 4 in Wheaton, has died from his injuries.

According to a gofundme page created to help the family with medical and funeral costs, John RuatPuia was walking home from school with his mother and two siblings when he was struck by a car on the 1200 block of Taft Street.

Police said the boy ran in front of the car, which was eastbound when he was struck. No charges have been filed against the driver.

According to the site, John was a kindergarten student at Lincoln Elementary School in Wheaton Warrenville Unit District 200. John and his family came to the United States from Malaysia through the World Relief Program. He lived with his parents and three siblings.

In a letter sent home Wednesday with Lincoln students, Principal Jeffery Mitchem said teachers, support team members and district response team members were in school Thursday "to process John's death with students."
