Harper's Prospect Heights campus to host festival

The Harper College Learning and Career Center in Prospect Heights will host a free Community Festival with entertainment, food and opportunities to learn more about education and career training.

The event will take place - rain or shine - from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 30, at the LCC, 1375 S. Wolf Road, in Prospect Heights.

"This is a chance to showcase our career programs and raise awareness within our diverse populations about what LCC has to offer," LCC Supervisor Jennifer Brennan said.

Brennan said the Community Festival will allow the LCC to better engage its neighbors. Families can check out a bouncy house, the Harper Hawk mascot, raffles and prizes, local food vendors, crafts and performances by the Holmes Middle School Jazz Combo and other groups.

The Prospect Heights Police Department will bring its Humvee and officers will lead reading time activities. Attendees can also have photos taken with career props and participate in sessions led by Play for Peace, a Chicago-based organization that puts on activities that encourage laughter, connection and compassion.

Harper representatives will be on hand to discuss foundational classes such as English as a Second Language and high school equivalency prep, as well as career programs including certified nursing assistant, phlebotomy, early childhood education, hotel management, truck driving, veterinary assistant, physical therapy aide and pharmacy technician.

Parking is available in back of the LCC facility.

"LCC provides services and support that can really jump-start careers and change lives," Brennan said. "We hope the Community Festival will bring families and neighbors together so they can see some of that and have fun at the same time."
