Police: Suspect in fatal hit-and-run returned to scene next day

Bensenville police say the driver who they believe struck and killed an 86-year-old woman outside a fast-food restaurant Friday morning, returned to the scene Saturday.

Police Chief Frank Kosman said officers were able to identify the driver and his truck after reviewing surveillance footage from the area and speaking to several witnesses.

"We learned that his routine was to go there every morning at the same time," Kosman said Monday. "So we sat and waited for him Saturday morning and he showed up, just as we were told he would."

The driver was interviewed and released without charges being filed, although police have impounded the truck. Kosman said charges are expected once the case is shared with the DuPage County state's attorney's office.

Kosman declined to say what, if any, explanation the driver has provided to police.

The victim, Modesta De La Rosa, was walking on the sidewalk in front of 1004 W. Irving Park Road around 7:30 a.m. when the driver of a gray, extended-cab Ford pickup truck pulled out and turned right, striking her, police said.

De La Rosa was pronounced dead at Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village.
