Bararington Area CROP Hunger Walk is Oct. 18, Zelma Dunn is Grand Marshal

The Barrington Area CROP Hunger Walk Committee is proud to announce that Zelma Dunn has been named Grand Marshal for the 33rd anniversary of this event which raises funds for people in need in our communities and around the world.

A Lake County resident for seventy years, Zelma has a long volunteer history, which includes volunteering at PADS and at Condell Hospital's Gift Shop and Coffee Shop Committee. She is best-known for her work with the Wauconda Island Lake Food Pantry. Thirty-five years ago at a Lions Club function, she was asked to serve on a board to start a much-needed food pantry in the Wauconda area. Many are thankful she replied, "Yes." She was one of twelve concerned citizens who learned how to become a non-profit organization, first located in a shopping center and now on township property. The pantry is run entirely by volunteers, open six mornings and two nights a week. Zelma continues to serve on the board via telephone conversations. Her favorite Bible passage has provided her inspiration for so many years of service:

He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8

Zelma was married to Bob Dunn for fifty-three years and has two daughters, two grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. Zelma's time with the food pantry "has been a pleasant experience and I feel we do make a difference. We have always had the support from citizens of the community. It's great to know they trust us and believe in us and our work." Those who know Zelma can see how she lives by her favorite saying: "Happiness is the perfume you get on your hands when you pick a flower for a friend."
