Gerber gets Prospect to win No. 20

Prospect became the first Mid-Suburban League girls volleyball team to reach 20 wins this season when it finished ninth at the Glenbrook North Invite on Saturday.

While going 3-2, first-year coach Laura Gerber's Knights improved to 20-7 with wins over Maine West (25-6, 25-18), Glenbrook South (27-25, 25-22) and Grayslake Central (25-17, 25-21).

Leading the Knights' attack were Kaeli Myers (30 kills), Maggie Porwit (21), Mary Mazurek (21), Brenda Kendziera (13) and Sammy Withey (13). Michelle Haaning handed out 85 assists while Nikki Giammarino had 75 digs.

Prospect is 7-1 heading into the final week of MSL East play. The Knights trail Hersey (17-5, 8-0) by one match and the two teams meet at the Jean Walker Field House in Mt. Prospect on Thursday.

Prospect visits Rolling Meadows on Tuesday while Hersey hosts Elk Grove.

Antioch Invite: Rolling Meadows went 2-3 in the eight-team invite to place sixth.

The Mustangs moved to within one match of a 20-win season (19-11-1) as they picked up two-set wins over Hampshire and Shoreland Lutheran.

Top attackers for the Mustangs were Maddie Sellergren (29 kills), Hannah Mickey (26), Connor Paige (5) Srnak (13) 13 kills, Megan Mich (9) and Meghan Slowik (6).

Megan King (120-of-125, 43 assists) and Mich (111-of-112, 39 assists) set the attack while Jenny Srnak led in blocking with 9. Sellergren (12 digs), Connor (12) and Madeline Rebsamen (11) paced the back row defense.

Rebsamen was 53-of-53 with 3 aces to lead the Mustangs in serving.

Elk Grove Invite: Crystal Lake South went 5-0 to win the invite and improve to 16-11 overall.

Schaumburg Invite: St. Charles North (25-3) defeated Cary Grove 25-22, 25-23 for the title after a 25-15, 25-19 triumph over St. Viator in the semifinals.

Saint Viator took fourth place, defeating Schaumburg 19-25, 25-19, 15-9 and Larkin with losses to Cary Grove, St. Charles North and Hononegah.

Alyssa Forbes (41 kills), Gabi Thomas (19), Emily Hayes (16), Kendall Claffey (9) Audrey Nuelle (8), Carrie Leazer (8) and Catherine Hickey (8) led the Lions (18-15) on attack while Thomas was their top blocker with 4.

Michaela Mueller was 335-of-337 with 93 assists while Ellie Meyer led the back row with 80 digs. Thomas served 6 aces and Leazer 3.

The host Saxons (17-9) went 3-2 in the invite, getting wins over Larkin, East Peoria and Bartlett.

Abbie Rahn (30 kills), Mallory Gerber (22), Morgan Sterrett (13), Julia Spitelli (11) Lexi Ross (10) were top attackers while Christina Candotti (35 assist) and Jessica Hartzman (35) set the offense. Ross added 19 blocks.

Gabby Paelmo (33 digs) and Lauren Lavigne led the Saxons' back row.

St Charles Invite: Barrington (8-19) went 1-4 in the highly-competitive Mizuno Cup, defeating Hinsdale South 25-11, 28-30, 26-24.

Huntley Invite: South Elgin went 3-2 at the Huntley Invite this weekend, beating Richmond-Burton, Streamwood and Harlem while losing to Crystal Lake Central and Huntley. Stat leaders for the Storm included Rachel Priore (46 kills, 34 digs), Hayley Fisher (22 kills) and Casie Swanson (32 assists, 17 digs).

Jacobs also went 3-2 at the tournament, beating St. Edward, Boylan and Harlem while losing to St. Ignatius and Montini. B
