Petition Drive to Repeal Cook County Sales Tax Increase

STREAMWOOD, Ill. - State Rep Fred Crespo, D-Hoffman Estates, has launched a community-wide petition drive urging the Cook County Board to repeal the increased sales tax rate, which is taking a toll on local families and businesses.

"Middle-class families are already working hard to make ends meet," Crespo said. "With this tax increase, all of the essential items they need to provide for their children, run a home or operate a business become less affordable."

Crespo's petition calls on the Cook County Board of Commissioners to repeal the county sales tax increase that was recently adopted. A strong voice for taxpayers, Crespo has repeatedly supported measures in the General Assembly that would provide relief, increase transparency and demand government accountability. Crespo was previously part of a successful effort in the General Assembly to help repeal the Cook County sales tax increase pushed through by former board President Todd Stroger.

"The employers and hard-working middle-class families of Illinois have already been overburdened by some of the highest property taxes in the country. The Cook County Board's decision to raise taxes on our families only makes matters worse," Crespo said. "It is my hope that this petition drive will help demonstrate the overwhelming number of people who stand to be hurt by careless policy decisions."

Residents wishing to sign or circulate Crespo's petition to repeal the Cook County sales tax increase are encouraged to call his full-time constituent service office at 630-372-3340 or email Fred@FredCrespo.com to receive an electronic copy.
