New Sears Outlet in Streamwood not part of legendary Sears

Sears opening a store instead of closing it?

Think again, because this one isn't part of the legendary Sears retail chain.

Sears Hometown and Outlet Stores Inc. is opening a new Sears Outlet store in Streamwood Thursday.

The new store is at 1040 S. Barrington Road.

It's the first opening of a new Sears Outlet this year, and the 10th opening of new store model nationwide, the company said.

Sears Hometown and Outlet Stores is no longer part of Hoffman Estates-based Sears Holdings Corp., the parent company of Sears and Kmart retail stores. Sears Holdings sold off the outlets about 3 years ago. Sears Outlet Stores are owned by either the corporation or by franchisees.

The Streamwood outlet store is about 18,000 square feet and stocked with household appliances, mattresses, tools and fitness equipment that are discontinued, reconditioned, overstocked or cosmetically blemished.

A grand opening will be held through Sunday and most merchandise will be marked 10 percent off.

Sears Hometown and Outlet Stores operates 1,260 stores nationwide as well as in Puerto Rico and Bermuda. Besides the new store in Streamwood, other suburban outlets include Elgin, Darien, Naperville, McHenry, Niles, Melrose Park, Bridgeview and Tinley Park.

A Sears Outlet executive was unavailable for comment.
