Rosemont officials paid Garth Brooks more than $1 million to kick off his tour at Allstate Arena, but they said they made $2 million in return. The village had fought to keep those figures private, saying it takes away the village's fighting chance against private arenas who don't have to disclose those figures. An Elgin man and a Sycamore man died after a car they were in crashed into a tree early Saturday morning and police say speed was likely a factor. A third person was seriously injured when the 2010 Acura TL lost control on the 1100 block of Forest Drive. Full story.

Breuder: COD union's accusations are 'irresponsible and unfounded'

College of DuPage President Robert Breuder released a 34-page document yesterday that accuses his critics of making "irresponsible and unfounded accusations" in response to a teachers union report blasting his administration. "No amount of unfounded criticism or bullying from a cadre of angry faculty who believe they are the epicenter of the college (and) who will never appreciate this great institution will jeopardize our future," Breuder wrote. Woodfield, Schaumburg police say they'll remain vigilant

Schaumburg police and a mall trade group say they'll remain vigilant in light of a terrorist group's recent calls for attacks on shopping malls, but that it's something that they've always done. Mundelein's village board voted last night to remove planning and zoning commissioner Ray Ladewig from the advisory panel. Ladewig had come under fire from Mayor Steve Lentz and trustees after the publication of a letter he wrote to the Daily Herald in December. Full story.

McHenry dems protest hiring of sheriff with DUI, assault convictions

McHenry County Democrats say hiring a man with two past convictions to serve a top post within the McHenry County sheriff's department sends the wrong message. McHenry County Sheriff Bill Prim, a Republican who started the job in December, hired Matt McNamara, his former campaign manager, as deputy chief of patrol Jan. 20, and he has misdeamenor convictions on his record for assault and DUI.
