Giant auto auction this weekend in Schaumburg

As many as 1,000 collector cars will be offered at an auction today through Saturday, Oct. 10-12, at the Schaumburg Convention Center.

The auction roster includes some outstanding consignments and high-profile collections including the “Hemi Under Glass Collection,” four of the most famous wheel-standers in drag racing history.

Best known for screaming down the track at 100 mph with noses to the sky and sparks flying from their wheelie bars as they skim on the pavement, the Hurst “Hemi Under Glass” Barracudas will serve as one of the event’s main attractions.

“The location of the property, the building’s amenities, including the attached hotel, along with the overall presentation of the location make it an ideal space for a three-day Mecum Auction of this magnitude,” said Mecum Auction Co. President Dana Mecum.

Admission to the event at 1551 Thoreau Drive North, is $20, with the gates opening daily at 8 a.m. Auctioning of vehicles starts at 1 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

The event will be broadcast Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 2 to 8 p.m. on Discovery’s Velocity Network. Mecum will live stream the entire auction at www.mecum.com. Mecum’s website is updated daily with the latest consignments including detailed descriptions and photographs of the vehicles. For information, call (262) 275-5050.

Established in 1988, Mecum Auctions is a family-run company headquartered in Walworth, Wis.
