Cunningham, Eagles net win

Norridge? No problem.

The long bus ride to the suburb was well worth it for Lakes' girls volleyball team Wednesday night.

Seeded 17th in the Class 3A Antioch sectional, the Eagles defeated host/No. 16 Ridgewood 25-17, 26-24 to advance to Saturday's 2 p.m. regional semifinal at Crystal Lake Central against the host Tigers, who are undefeated and top-seeded.

"This was a great win for us," Lakes coach Carla Thompson said. "We got behind in the second game but were able to pull it out. I was worried that we might not come out to win since the winner plays Crystal Lake Central."

Keshia Cunningham posted a career-high 10 blocks and added 3 kills for Lakes.

"(She) was a beast at the net," Thompson said.

The Eagles also got big contributions from Kathy Szczesniak (3 kills, 3 assists); Katie Thompson (3 aces, 3 digs); Sarah Bartlett (2 aces); Mandy Fischer (2 aces, 4 blocks); Steffanie Fisher (2 kills, 2 blocks, 2 assists); Kelly Bol (2 blocks); and Lindsay Frisby (4 digs).

"I should have known my team better," Carla Thompson said. "The seniors do not want to go out without a good fight."

Bartlett, a sophomore, was just called up and has already made an impact.

"She has the speed that we have been lacking this season," Carla Thompson said.

Lakes played Crystal Lake Central earlier this season.

"We look forward to playing Crystal Lake Central," Carla Thompson said. "We hope to play our best match of the season."

St. Viator d. Warren: In Class 4A, the 16th-seeded and host Blue Devils lost to the 17th-seeded Lions 25-16, 15-25, 25-19.
