Flagger Training Course: Construction work zone flaggers have one of the most dangerous occupations. To train both novice and experienced construction zone flaggers to provide safe passage of traffic through and around work zones, the Continuing and Professional Education Department at McHenry County College offers a four-hour National Safety Council Flagger Training Course. Classes are offered once a month. Registration is under way for the following class dates: Jan. 9, Feb. 6, March 6, April 3 and May 8.
In addition to controlling traffic through work areas, the program aims to minimize confusion by bringing standard flagging procedures to our nation's highways. Statistics from the National Safety Council illustrate how dangerous a road work zone can be for both workers and drivers. In 2004, 1,068 people were killed and 47,570 were injured in work zones.
The National Safety Council's Flagger Training Course is a comprehensive skill-building program that meets federal industry guidelines using the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for controlling traffic through construction work areas. Certification has become priority for OSHA and IDOT.
The course fee is $119. For more information, call Dee Comella at (815) 479-7591.
