Krutwig-led Jacobs goes 3-0 in pool

Elk Grove coach Anthony Furman tried to use every gimmick defense at his disposal to stop Jacobs senior center Conrad Krutwig.

Nothing worked.

Krutwig's 32 points on 12-of-15 shooting from the field gave the Golden Eagles plenty of offense to produce a 71-47 win over the Grenadiers in the final game of pool play at the Jacobs boys basketball holiday tournament in Algonquin Tuesday night.

"I thought Matt (Martinski) did a good job on (Krutwig) and as a team we did a good job guarding Krutwig," said Furman. "He is such a strong kid and he does a good job of resealing himself in the post. He has great post principles and they (Jacobs) do a good job of getting him the ball."

Krutwig added 13 rebounds, 5 blocked shots and 4 assists to his game-high point total.

"Conrad was a monster tonight," said Jacobs coach Jim Hinkle. "He was really focused tonight and we did a good job of getting him the ball in good position to score."

Krutwig's effort in the third quarter helped the Golden Eagles (8-3) bust open a close game.

Nursing a slim 29-24 lead early in the quarter, Jacobs went on a 10-0 run to take a 39-24 advantage with 4:12 left. Krutwig made 4-of-4 shots from the field and scored 9 of his team's 10 points as Jacobs turned a 5-point lead into a 15-point lead.

"The guys did a great job of getting the right angles to get me the ball in great position to score," said Krutwig. "We started out sloppy but we finally started taking over in the second half. We played very well as a team in the second half."

The Golden Eagles' biggest lead was 71-43 when Mike Barch canned a 15-footer with 57 seconds left in the game.

Tim Moran backed up Krutwig's performance with 13 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists.

"We played very well in the second half," said Hinkle. "We were finally able to get some separation."
